Official Rulebook
Superleagues Ball Hockey follows the rules outlines in the Official Canadian Ball Hockey Rule Book. A summary of this rule book can be found online under the rules and regulations section of our website. Hard copies are also available upon request. All rules stated in this book and in the following document will be in effect during all seasons, unless otherwise stated.
Highlights, Changes, House Rules
Double Minors for Stick Infractions
Assessed on all High-Stick, Cross-check, Slash, Spear, Butt-end penalties
2 minors assessed, counts as 1 penalty
3 Penalty Game Ejections
Assessed to any player who receives 3 penalties in one game
Misconducts count as one penalty
Player is ejected from game, no suspensions incurred
High-Sticking the Ball
A minor penalty is assessed.
Major Penalties
Assessed with additional 1-Game suspension
Player misses next game and incurs fine
Fast Face-Offs
Ball is dropped 15 seconds following stoppage of play
5 seconds for Visitors to change lines, ref raises arm, no more visitor changes
5 seconds for Home to change lines, then ref blows whistle
5 seconds for Centres to line-up for face-off, then ref drops ball
If a Centre or his team is not ready, Centre is waived from face-off
If this happens a second time in the same face-off, team is assessed a minor penalty for Delay-of-Game
Time-Outs
1 per game per team
Can be called only at initial stoppage of play
Equipment Standards
All Players must wear CSA approved Helmets and Gloves (exceptions for D-Gel Zebra Gloves)
Helmets must be in good condition, unaltered, and J-Clips must be removed
All Goalies must wear CSA approved Masks and protective equipment (no Cats-Eye masks or street hockey equipment)
All Players and Goalies must use CSA approved hockey sticks with wood or composite blades (no plastic blades)
Any player who does not meet the Equipment Standards will not be allowed to play
Any player who is caught using illegal equipment will be assessed a minor penalty and will not be allowed to play until it is rectified
Player Eligibility
All players must be 18 years of age to play, or 16 with parental consent
Players can only be a member of one team per season regardless of division
Players are required to show sufficient identification if requested by an official to prove his identity
Players who are suspended during any current or previous season by any WRBHA sanctioned league or event will not be allowed to play until their suspension has been served
Players who have unpaid fines during any current or previous season will not be allowed to play until the fines are paid in full
To play in the playoffs, the player must have played at least 5 (4 in Fall/Winter seasons) regular season games, backup goalies must only play 1 game to be eligible to play as a goalie in the playoffs.
Cumulative Stick Infractions
Any player who receives his 4th double-minor stick foul will be suspended for 1 game
Any player who receives his 6th double-minor stick foul will be suspended for 3 games
Any player who receives his 8th double-minor stick foul will be suspended indefinitely and reviewed by league
Cumulative Penalty Minutes
Any Player who accumulates 50 minutes in penalties during the regular season will be suspended for 1 game
Any Player who accumulates 75 minutes in penalties during the regular season will be suspended for the remainder of the season
Any team who accumulates 300 minutes in penalties during a single season will be assessed a team fine of $100
Any team who reaches 400 minutes in penalties will lose 2 points in the standings, receive a $200 fine, and be placed on probation for the remainder of the season
Cumulative Misconduct Penalties
Any player who receives his 3rd misconduct penalty of any kind will be fined $25 in addition to any other fines they may incur
Player will be placed on Probation for remainder of season; terms will be assessed on a per player basis
Verbal Abuse of Officials
Verbal abuse of officials will not be tolerated on or off the floor
Any player who demonstrates personal disrespect or abuse to any official during or after any game will be assessed a misconduct penalty (severity called at official’s discretion)
All Verbal Abuse called outside the rink will be assessed a Game misconduct
Checking from Behind Majors
All CFB major penalties will be assessed an additional 1 game suspension added to the regular 1 game suspension that comes with the game misconduct penalty
CFB Minor Penalty = 2/3 mins + Game misconduct (minimum 1 game total suspension)
CFB Major Penalty = 5/7 mins + Game misconduct (minimum 2 game total suspension)
Uniform Code & Violations
All Team players must wear matching base-colored Jerseys (including Goalies), with stitched numbers (no tape)
All Team players must wear matching base-colored Shorts, no sweat pants are allowed
All Soccer or hard-plastic Shin Guards MUST be covered with socks (excluding Mylec and D-Gel Shin Guards)
If shin guards are worn, covering socks must be of matching base colour
Players who wear Mylec or D-Gel brand shin guards are not required to cover them with socks, however these pads must be of matching base color as sport socks used by the rest of the team
Any player who is in violation of the uniform code will not be permitted to play
Uniform Grace Period expires roughly 2 weeks into the season (see deadlines for exact date of current season)
Forfeit & Default Games
Any team who fails to show or cannot begin a game with the required amount of players will forfeit the game and be assessed a team fine
Any Team who cannot finish a game due to amount of players required will default the game and be assessed a team fine
Team fines of these types are $100 per offense
Any Team receiving their second offense of this kind will be reviewed by the league and may be suspended indefinitely
Division Placements & Changes
Teams are placed into divisions based on their history, player experience and skill at the league’s discretion
The league has the right to require teams to change divisions after playing up to 5 games if it is in the best interests of the league to balance the divisions further
The league cannot guarantee a team’s divisional placement based on personal schedules or requests
League Schedule & Playoffs
Regular Season schedule will consist of 20 games (Spring) or 15 games (Fall/Winter)
Playoffs are played in a tournament format or Best-of-three series (depending on season and floor time available)
The league schedule is created prior to the season start date, and is subject to change only if required by the league or facility
The league will not take requests for re-scheduling games due to personal schedules or circumstances
Facility Conduct
No drinking of alcoholic beverages will be permitted inside all league facilities. Teams will be fined $250 plus lose 2 pts for the 1st incident, and indefinitely suspended for the 2nd incident
Smoking is prohibited inside all league facilities
No Offensive language will be tolerated anywhere in the building
No spitting sunflower seeds on benches or in dressing rooms
Teams and players are required to clean up their dressing room prior to leaving
All teams are responsible for any damages they inflict to any part of the facility
These offenses affect the entire league and our ability to play in the facility, and will not be tolerated!
Game and Penalty Time
Warm-up begins BEFORE the scheduled starting time and is 5 minutes long
Games will consist of two 20 minute periods in stop time (Spring), or two 25 minute periods in running time (Fall/Winter)
Period intermissions are 2 minutes long
Games will not run past the allotted permit time – 5 minutes remaining will reduce game clock to 2 minutes
Overtime is not applicable during regular season, play-offs will play sudden-death overtime in 10 minute periods
Minor penalties are 2/3 minutes, major penalties are 5/7 minutes, and misconducts are 10 minutes
Roster Requirements
Teams may have up to 25 players on their roster at any given time (including goalies)
Teams may add or remove players from their roster until the posted Roster Deadline
A player can only be listed on one team’s roster per season, regardless of division
Game Requirements & Play
Game is played with 5 players and 1 goalie per team (goalie can be substituted for additional player)
Teams must have a minimum of 6 players present to begin a game (may include goalie)
Team is allowed 5 minutes to wait for a missing goalie, but will be assessed a minor delay-of-game penalty to begin the game
Teams may not play under the minimum required number of players during a game (e.g. coincidental penalties). If this happens, offending team will default the game and be assessed a team fine
Ball is considered dead after contacting any part of the roof
Floating blue line is in effect for off-sides
Automatic icing is in effect (Spring), or No Icing applicable (Fall/Winter)
